Francis Scott Key (1779–1843)
Key, Francis Scott. An American poet; born in Frederick County, MD, Aug. 9, 1779; died at Baltimore, Jan. 11, 1843. Author of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner,’ which was suggested and partially written while he was viewing the bombardment of Fort McHenry, near Baltimore, by the British fleet, on which he was a prisoner. It is sung to the tune of ‘Anacreon in Heaven,’ by J. S. Smith.
