Omar Khayyám (1048–1131)

Khayyám, Omar (kī-yäm’). A noted Persian poet, mathematician, and astronomer; born at Nishápúr, 1048; died there, 1131. He is best known by his famous ‘Rubáiyát,’ or ‘Quatrains,’—four-line stanzas with the third unrhymed,—of which about 500 are considered genuine; Fitzgerald gives 101.
