Étienne de La Boëtie (1530–1563)

La Boëtie, Étienne de (lä bo-e-tē’). A French anti-monarchical poet; born at Sarlat, Nov. 1, 1530; died at Germignan, Aug. 18, 1563. He was a friend of Montaigne, who brought out an edition of his writings (1570–71). Of these the best known is the ‘Discourse on Voluntary Slavery,’ a rather flat philippic against monarchy.
