Saint Alfonso Maria de’ Liguori (1696–1787)

Liguori, Alfonso Maria de’ (lē-gwō’rē). An Italian theologian and Doctor of the Church; born at Naples, 1696; died on Aug. 1, 1787. While bishop of Sant’ Agata de’ Goti, he founded the religious congregation of Redemptorists. He was “beatified” in 1816; canonized in 1839; proclaimed “Doctor of the Universal Church” in 1871. He wrote ‘Moral Theology’ (ed. of 1881, 8 vols.), and many books of devotion.
