Auguste Longnon (1844–1911)

Longnon, Auguste Honoré (lô-yô‘). A French historian and philologist; born at Paris, Oct. 18, 1844; died in 1911. He was a shoemaker, but by diligent cultivation of his rare natural gifts rose to eminence among French scholars. He became professor of history in the Collège de France, 1892. His principal works are: ‘Geography of Gaul in the Sixth Century’ (1878); ‘Historical Atlas of France’ (1884–89).
