Thomas Loraine McKenney (1785–1859)

McKenney, Thomas Loraine. An American prose-writer; born in Hopewell, MD, March 21, 1785; died in New York City, Feb. 19, 1859. He published: ‘Sketches of a Tour to the Lakes,’ etc. (1827). With James Hall he wrote ‘A History of Indian Tribes,’ illustrated with 120 colored Indian portraits (3 vols., 1838–44); and ‘Memoirs, Official and Personal, with Sketches of Travels among the Northern and Southern Indians,’ etc. (2d ed. 1846).
