Marguerite de Navarre (1492–1549)
Marguerite d’Angoulême, or d’Alençon, or de Valois, or de Navarre (mär-gā-rēt’ dä
-gö-lām’). Queen of Navarre, and famous for her stories, poems, and letters; born at Angoulême, April 1492; died in Bigorre, 1549. She was a great patroness of literature. She is best known in literature by the celebrated ‘Heptameron,’ a collection of tales. A book of her poems, ‘Pearls of the Pearl of Princesses,’ appeared in 1547; ‘Letters,’ in 1841–42.
