Martial (c. 40–c. 104 A.D.)

Martial—Marcus Valerius Martialis (mär’shal). A famous Latin poet; born at Bilbilis, Spain, 40? A.D.; died in Spain about 104?. He spent most of his life at Rome, where he enjoyed the favor of the emperors Titus and Domitian. His fame rests upon his ‘Epigrams,’ in fifteen books; they are witty and marked by great felicity of form and expression, but are often sensual and marred by flattery of the great. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
