Fernão Mendes Pinto (1509–1583)
Mendes Pinto, Fernão or Fernam (men’deth-pē
-to). A Portuguese traveler; born near Coimbra 1509; died near Lisbon, 1583. He spent many romantic years as a traveler in the East, being repeatedly captured, often sold as a slave, acquiring a large fortune, becoming for a time a Jesuit, founding a Roman Catholic seminary in Japan, etc. He wrote ‘Mendez-Pinto’s Pilgrimage’ (1614), which was translated into the principal European languages, and has become a Portuguese classic.
