Michaelangelo (1475–1564)

Michelangelo (mā-kel-än’je-lō)—Michelagniolo Buonarroti. The eminent Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet; born at Caprese, March 6, 1475; died at Rome, Feb. 18, 1564. Of worldwide and lasting renown as an artist and architect, his claim to literary fame rests upon his sonnets and letters, chiefly inspired by Vittoria Colonna.
