Matija Ban (1818–1903)

Ban, Matija (bän). A Serbian dramatist; born in Ragusa, Dec. 18, 1818; died in 1903. He was tutor, journalist, and critic; but his best work was done for the theatre, ‘Dobrila and Milenko’ being a masterpiece in tragedy, and in a less degree ‘The Muscovite.’ His poems, notably ‘Odes to the Sultan,’ are virile and correct.
