Donald Grant Mitchell (Ik Marvel) (1822–1908)
Mitchell, Donald Grant [“Ik Marvel”]. A noted American essayist and novelist; born at Norwich, CT, April 1822; died on Dec. 15, 1908. Originally a lawyer, he was consul at Venice 1853–55; he later lived on his estate Edgewood, near New Haven, CT. His best-known works are: ‘Reveries of a Bachelor’ (1850); ‘Dream Life’ (1851); ‘My Farm of Edgewood’ (1863); ‘Wet Days at Edgewood’ (1864). He had written also: ‘Doctor Johns’ (1866), a novel; ‘Bound Together’ (1884); ‘English Lands, Letters and Kings’ (1889–90); ‘American Lands and Letters’ (1897).
