John Banim (1798–1842)

Banim, John. An Irish novelist, dramatist, and poet; born in Kilkenny, April 3, 1798; died there, Aug. 13, 1842. His best work is contained in the ‘O’Hara Tales’ (2 series, 1825–27). His chief novels are ‘The Nowlans,’ ‘Boyne Water,’ and ‘The Croppy.’ His brother Michael was associated in his work, and ‘The Bit o’ Writin’ and Other Tales’ (1838) is ostensibly a joint composition. A tragedy, ‘Damon and Pythias,’ was represented in London in 1821. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
