Sir Thomas More (1478–1535)

More, Thomas, Sir. An eminent English statesman and miscellaneous writer; born in London, Feb. 7, 1478; executed on Tower Hill, July 6, 1535. A great lawyer, he became Lord Chancellor, and was put to death by Henry VIII. for refusing to take the oath renouncing the Pope and abjuring Catherine’s rights. His greatest literary work was the ‘Utopia’ (1516), an account of an imaginary ideal commonwealth supposed to exist on a distant island of the Atlantic. He wrote besides: ‘Life of John Picus, Earl of Mirandola’ (1510); ‘History of Richard III.’ (1513); etc. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
