Rafael María Baralt (1810–1860)

Baralt, Rafael María (bä-rält’). A Venezuelan poet and historian; born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, July 3, 1810; died in Madrid, Jan. 4, 1860. He was educated in Bogotá and at Caracas; served in the Venezuelan army, and went to Spain in 1843, where he held posts of honor and attained literary fame. He wrote: ‘Ancient and Modern History of Venezuela’ (1841) and ‘Odes to Columbus and to Spain.’
