Barante, Amable Guillaume Prosper Brugière, Baron de (bär-ät’). A French historian and statesman; born in Riom, Auvergne, June 10, 1782; died at his estate near Thiers, Nov. 22, 1866. In letters his achievements are: ‘View of French Literature in the Eighteenth Century’ (1808); ‘History of the Valois Dukes of Burgundy, 1364–1477 (1824–26), this being his masterpiece; ‘Story of Joan of Arc’; and various works on periods of the great French Revolution.
