Novalis (Friedrich von Hardenberg) (1772–1801)

Novalis (nō-väl’ēs), pseudonym of Friedrich von Hardenberg. A German philosopher and mystic; born in Saxony, 1772; died in 1801. His works include: ‘Hymns to the Night’ (1797); ‘Disciples at Sais’; and ‘Heinrich von Ofterdingen,’ his most considerable work. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
