John Gorham Palfrey (1796–1881)
Palfrey, John Gorham. An American clergyman and author; born in Boston, May 2, 1796; died in Cambridge, MA, April 26, 1881. He graduated at Harvard; was pastor of Brattle Street Unitarian Church, Boston; professor in Harvard, 1830–39; member of the State Legislature, 1842–43; Secretary of State of Massachusetts, 1844–48; and member of the Antislavery Congress at Paris, 1867. He published numerous lectures, addresses, and sermons; and wrote: ‘The Relation between Judaism and Christianity’ (1854). His enduring work, however, is ‘The History of New England’ (5 vols., 1859–90). (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
