Aleksey Pisemsky (1820–1881)
Pisemsky, Aleksey Feofilaktovich (pē-zem’skē). A Russian novelist; born at Ramene in the government of Kostroma, March 20, 1820; died in Jan. 1881. His greatest novel is ‘A Thousand Souls’ (1858); he wrote also ‘The Stormy Sea’ (1863); ‘The Men of 1840’ (1868); ‘In the Whirlpool’ (1871). Some of his short stories are in every way admirable, among them ‘The Wood Demon’ and ‘Pietershik.’
