Claude de Pontoux (c. 1530–1579)

Pontoux, Claude de (pô-tö’). A French versifier; born at Chalons-sur-Saône, about 1530; died there, 1579. He wrote: ‘Lamentable Harangues on the Death of Divers Animals’; ‘Love’s Smiles and Tears’ (1576); ‘The Idea and Other Works’ (1579); ‘The Idea’ being a lady to whom he paid a hopeless suit.
