Charles Irénée Castel, Abbé de Saint-Pierre (1658–1743)

Saint-Pierre, Charles Irénée Castel, Abbé de (sa-piãr’). A French philanthropist; born at St. Pierre (Normandy), Feb. 18, 1658; died on April 29, 1743. Among his writings are: ‘Project of Universal Peace’ (3 vols., 1713); ‘Polysynody,’ a severe stricture on Louis XIV.’s government, and a plan for the administration of the affairs of the kingdom by a system of councils for each department of the government; and a number of projects for the betterment of society in every way.
