César Richard, Abbé de Saint-Réal (1639–1692)

Saint-Réal, César Richard, Abbé de (sa-rā-äl’). A French historian, called “the French Sallust”; born at Chambéry, 1639; died there, 1692. He was official historian of Savoy, and wrote a ‘History of the Spanish Conspiracy of 1618 against the Republic of Venice’ (1674), his principal work. His historical novel, ‘Don Carlos,’ is the chief source of Schiller’s drama of that name.
