Maximilian Schele de Vere (1820–1898)

Schele de Vere, Maximilian. A Swedish-American philologist; born near Wexiö, Sweden, Nov. 1, 1820; died in 1898; coming to the United States in 1843, he was professor of modern languages in the University of Virginia. His works include: ‘Outlines of Comparative Philology’ (1853); ‘Stray Leaves from the Book of Nature’ (1856); ‘Studies in English’; ‘Glimpses of Europe in 1848’; ‘Romance of American History’; ‘Wonders of the Deep’; etc.
