Johann Elias Schlegel (1719–1749)

Schlegel, Johann Elias (shlā’gel). A German poet; born at Meissen, Jan. 17, 1719; died at Soröe in Denmark, Aug. 13, 1749. He wrote several tragedies, among them ‘Hermann’ (the ancient Teutonic hero Arminius) and ‘Canute’; and two spirited comedies, ‘The Triumph of Good Women’ and ‘Mute Beauty.’
