João Manuel Pereira da Silva (1817–1898)

Silva, João Manuel Pereira da (pe-rā’rä dä sēl’vä). A Brazilian historian; born at Rio de Janeiro, 1817; died in 1898. He wrote: ‘History of the Founding of the Empire of Brazil’ (3 vols., 1864–68); ‘Brazilian Plutarch’ (2 vols., 1866); ‘Jeronimo Corte-Real’; ‘Portuguese Literature: Its Past and Present’ (1866); ‘Second Period of the Reign of Dom Pedro I. in Brazil’ (1875); ‘History of Brazil during the Minority of Dom Pedro II., 1831–40’ (1882); ‘Epic Poetry’ (1889).
