Evangelinus Apostolides Sophocles (1807–1883)

Sophocles, Evangelinus Apostolides (sof’ō-klēz). A Grecian scholar and educational writer; born in Tsangaranda, Thessaly, Greece, March 8, 1807; died in Cambridge, MA, Dec. 17, 1883. Coming to America in 1829, he became professor of ancient, modern, and Byzantine Greek in Harvard University in 1860. Among his publications are: ‘Romaic Grammar’ (1842); ‘Glossary of Later and Byzantine Greek’ (1860, forming vol. vii., new series of ‘Memoirs of the American Academy’); and ‘Greek Lexicon of the Roman and Byzantine Periods,’ his most important work (1870).
