Robert Southey (1774–1843)

Southey, Robert. A celebrated English poet and prose-writer; born in Bristol, Aug. 12, 1774; died on March 21, 1843. His principal poems are: ‘Joan of Arc’ (1795); ‘The Curse of Kehama,’ based upon Hindu mythology (1810); ‘A Vision of Judgment,’ an apotheosis of George III. (1821). Among his prose works are: ‘History of Brazil’ (1810–19); ‘Life of Nelson’ (1813); ‘Life of John Wesley’ (1820); ‘Book of the Church’ (1824); ‘Life of John Bunyan’ (1830); and ‘The Doctor’ (1834–37). He was made poet-laureate in 1813. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
