Walafrid Strabo (807?–849)

Strabo, Walafrid. A mediæval poet; born in Suabia about 807; died on Aug. 18, 849. He wrote a running exegetical commentary on the Scripture, ‘The Orderly Gloss’ (‘Glossa Ordinaria’), which for long was a work of high authority in the schools; a history of the development and growth of ecclesiastical institutions and ordinances—‘Of the Beginnings and Growths of Things Ecclesiastical’; ‘Life of St. Gall’; ‘Life of St. Othmar’; the poem ‘Vision of Saint Wettin,’ in which is an episode of the poet’s journey to Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven; another poem, ‘The Little Garden,’ treating of the plants in the garden of the poet’s monastery.
