Aleksandr Sumarokov (1717–1777)

Sumarokov, Aleksandr Petrovich (sö-mär’o-kov). A Russian playwright; born in Moscow, Nov. 23, 1717; died on Oct. 12, 1777. His tragedy ‘Khorev’ (1747) first attracted attention; it was followed by ‘Sinav and Truvor’ and ‘Semira,’ which added to his fame. He also wrote comedies, odes, sonnets, madrigals, epigrams, and fables.
