Benjamin Tucker Tanner (1835–1923)

Tanner, Benjamin Tucker. An American Methodist Episcopal bishop of African descent; born in Pittsburgh, PA, Dec. 25, 1835; died in 1923. He was for many years editor of the Christian Recorder, and was founder and editor of the A. M. E. Church Review. He was ordained bishop in 1888. Among his works are: ‘The Origin of the Negro,’ ‘Is the Negro Cursed?’ ‘A Hint to Ministers,’ ‘The Color of Solomon.’
