Nicholas Udall (1505–1556)

Udall, Nicholas (ū’dal). An English dramatist; born in Hampshire, in 1505; died in 1556. He was a Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and master of Eton. His school-books were very popular; but he is chiefly remembered as the author of ‘Ralph Royster Doyster,’ the first regular comedy in the English language.
