Juan Valera (1824–1905)

Valera, Juan. A Spanish poet and novelist; born at Cabra in the province of Cordova, Oct. 18, 1824; died at Madrid, April 19, 1905. He wrote: ‘Poems’ (1858); ‘Critical Studies’ (1864–84); ‘Pepita Jiménez,’ a novel (1874); ‘The Illusions of Doctor Faustino’ (1876); ‘The Commendador Mendoza’ (1877); ‘Doña Luz’ (1878); ‘New Studies’ (1884); ‘Songs, Romances, and Poems’ (1885); ‘Stories, Dialogues, and Fantasies’ (1887); ‘A Good Reputation.’ (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
