Alfred de Vigny (1797–1863)
Vigny, Alfred Victor, Comte de (vēn-yē’). A French writer, member of the Academy; born in Loches, March 27, 1797; died in Paris, Sept. 18, 1863. He left military service for literature; and his romance ‘Cinq-Mars’ (1826) went through several editions. He also wrote several plays; his translation of ‘Othello’ was acted in 1829, and his ‘Chatterton’ was a complete triumph. In 1843 he published several poems in the Revue des Deux Mondes. His ‘Consultations of Dr. Noir’ appeared in 1856. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
