Wilhelm Wackernagel (1806–1869)

Wackernagel, Wilhelm. A Swiss linguist and antiquarian; born at Berlin, April 23, 1806; died on Dec. 21, 1869, at Basle, where he was professor of German language and literature. His principal writings are: ‘German Dictionary’ (5th ed. 1878); ‘History of German Literature’ (1848–55); ‘Land Laws of the Schwabenspiegel’ (1840); ‘Old German Sermons and Prayers’ (1876); ‘The Little Book of Wine’ (1845); and other volumes of poems.
