Burkard Waldis (c. 1490–1555)
Waldis, Burkard (väl’dis). A German rhyming fabulist; born about 1490; died about 1555. He was a Franciscan friar, but on returning from a pilgrimage to Rome, embraced the doctrines of Luther. He wrote a drama in Low German, ‘The Parable of the Prodigal Son’; translated the Psalter into German verse; and wrote ‘Æsopus,’ a collection of about 400 rhymed fables and drolleries.
