Wheeler, Benjamin Ide. An American educator; president of the University of California after 1899; born at Randolph, MA, July 15, 1854; died in 1927. Among his publications are: ‘Introduction to the History of Language’ (1890); ‘Dionysos and Immortality’ (1899); ‘Life of Alexander the Great’ (1900); ‘Democracy and Education in America,’ in German (1910).
