George Wilkes (1817–1885)

Wilkes, George. An American journalist, born in New York City in 1817; died there, Sept. 23, 1885. He was editor of the Spirit of the Times from 1850, and well known as a politician and a traveler. He wrote a ‘History of California’ (1845); and a book of travel, ‘Europe in a Hurry’ (1852).
