Bhavabhuti (Eighth Century)

Bhavabhuti (bha-va-bhö’ti or bė-ha-va-bė-hō’ti). An Indian dramatic poet next in celebrity to Kâlidâsa; he lived in the eighth century. His ‘Mâlatîmâdhava,’ which might be entitled ‘The Secret Marriage,’ portrays Indian society in effective traits. The ‘Mahâvîratsharita’ (‘Fortunes of the Great Hero’) deals with the deeds of Râma and his victory over the giant Râvana, ravisher of Sîta, Râma’s consort. The ‘Uttararâmatsharita’ (‘Other Fortunes of Râma’) portrays the long-suffering of Sîta and her reconcilement with Râma, all in a sympathetic vein and sometimes with great force.
