George Forrester Williams (1837–1920)
Williams, George Forrester. An American author and journalist; born on the Rock of Gibraltar in 1837; died in 1920. He joined the staff of the New York Times in 1860, served actively throughout the Civil War and acted as war correspondent 1864–65, correspondent during the Franco-Mexican War in 1867, managing editor of the New York Times, 1871–73, and of the New York Herald, 1874. Author of: ‘Bullet and Shell,’ ‘Lucy’s Rebel,’ ‘The Memorial War Book,’ ‘Unfair in Love and War,’ ‘Across the Lines,’ ‘Half a Century of New York Newspaper Life.’
