Alexander Fraser Tytler, Lord Woodhouselee (1747–1813)

Woodhouselee, Tytler, Alexander Fraser, Lord. A Scottish historical writer; born in Edinburgh, Oct. 15, 1747; died there, Jan. 5, 1813. He wrote, besides many other works, ‘Essay on the Principles of Translation’ (1791–1813); ‘The Elements of General History, Ancient and Modern’ (1801); which was long an authoritative textbook; ‘Life of Lord Kames’ (1807); and ‘Life of Petrarch’ (1810).
