Edward Wilmot Blyden (1832–1912)

Blyden, Edward Wilmot. An African-American author; born at St. Thomas, USVI, Aug. 3, 1832; died in 1912. After vainly seeking, in 1845, admission to some college in the United States, he went to Liberia, and graduated at the Alexander High School, of which he afterwards became principal. In 1880 he became president of Liberia College, held important governmental positions, and was twice commissioner to the Presbyterian General Assembly of the United States (in 1861 and 1880). He was proficient in many languages, including Latin, Greek, Spanish, Hebrew, and Arabic. He published: ‘Liberia’s Offering’ (1873); ‘From West Africa to Palestine’ (1873); ‘The Negro in Ancient History’; etc.
