Grace Aguilar (1816–1847)

Aguilar, Grace (ä-gē-lär’). An English novelist; born at Hackney, June 2, 1816; died in Frankfort-on-the-Main, Sept. 16, 1847. She was the daughter of Jewish parents of Spanish origin. Her first books were in defense of the Jewish religion: ‘The Spirit of Judaism’ (1842); ‘The Jewish Faith’ (1846); and ‘Women of Israel’ (1846). She is now best known by her domestic and sentimental novels, only one of which ‘Home Influence’ (1847), appeared in her lifetime. Among others are: ‘The Vale of Cedars’ (1850); and ‘The Days of Bruce’ (1852). (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
