John Ross Browne (1821–1875)

Browne, John Ross. An Irish-American traveler and author; born in Ireland in 1821; died in Oakland, CA, Dec. 8, 1875. He came when a child to the United States. His chief works are: ‘Etchings of a Whaling Cruise, with Notes of a Sojourn on the Island of Zanzibar’ (1846); ‘Yusef, or the Journey of the Fragi: a Crusade in the East’ (1853); ‘The Land of Thor’ (1866); and ‘Adventures in the Apache Country’ (1869).
