William Crary Brownell (1851–1928)
Brownell, William Crary. An American essayist and critic; born in New York City, Aug. 30, 1851; died in 1928. He graduated from Amherst, and devoted himself to critical and editorial work in New York. He was literary adviser of Scribner’s and wrote: ‘French Traits: an Essay on Comparative Criticism’ (1889); ‘French Art’ (1892); and ‘Newport’ (1896); ‘Victorian Prose Masters’ (1901); ‘American Prose Masters’ (1909); ‘Criticism’ (1914).
