William Gannaway Brownlow (1805–1877)
Brownlow, William Gannaway (“Parson Brownlow”). An American politician, journalist, and author; born in Wythe County, VA, Aug. 29, 1805; died in Knoxville, TN, April 29, 1877. During his early career he was an itinerant preacher, editor, and lecturer. He was a Union champion during the Civil War, and banished from the Confederate lines on that ground. In 1865 he was elected governor of Tennessee, and was re-elected in 1867. He was U.S. Senator from 1869 to 1875. Among his works are: ‘The Great Iron Wheel Examined’ (1858); ‘Sketches of the Rise, Progress, and Decline of Secession’ (1862).
