Ferdinand Brunetière (1849–1906)
Brunetière, Ferdinand (brün-tyãr’). A distinguished French critic; born in Toulon, July 19, 1849; died at Paris, Dec. 9, 1906. He was the editor of the ‘Revue des Deux Mondes’ from 1895 until his death, and became a member of the French Academy, 1893. In criticism he inclines to the idealist as opposed to the naturalist school. His principal works are: ‘History and Literature’ (1884, 3 vols.); ‘The Naturalistic Novel’ (1883); ‘Essays on Contemporary Literature’ (1892); ‘Epochs of the French Theatre’ (1892); ‘Critical Studies, in the History of French Literature’ (8 vols., 1880–1906).
