The American
Henry James (1843–1916)

American, The, by Henry James, was published in 1877. It was the novelist’s third book of fiction, a volume of short tales and a novel preceding it. The central character, Christopher Newman, is a typical product of the United States: cool, self-confident, and able, impressing, by the force and directness of his nature, all who come in contact with him. Having made his fortune, he is traveling in Europe for pleasure. He falls in love with a Parisian lady of noble birth, who is half English,—Madame de Cintré, a widow; and she comes to care for him enough to disregard the mésalliance, even to engage herself to him. The obstacles in the way of their marriage give rise to many dramatic incidents.  1
