Lamii (Mohammed Ben Osman Ben Ali Nakkash)

Poems from Oriental Languages: To Mailuka

(Turkish—Sixteenth Century)

Translation in Dublin University Magazine

WHEN the misbelieving Guebre saw

Thy black locks and dazzling brow,

Wonder smote him to the soul, and awe.

Bilirim! he cried: I now

See that God should be adored

For the darkness as the light;

Allah Akbar! God the Lord

Made not only day but night.
