Antoinette Deshoulières (1638–1694)
Deshoulières, Antoinette (dā-zö-lyãr’). An eminent French poet; born in Paris, Jan. 1, 1638; died there, Feb. 17, 1694. She was educated in the spirit of the “précieuses” of the Hôtel Rambouillet, and so assimilated their spirit and methods as to be called the “Tenth Muse” for her tragedies, comedies, and operas. Her best work and inspirations are found in her ‘Idylls’ especially in ‘The Sheep’; ‘The Flowers’; ‘The Birds.’
