Aratus (fl. c. 290–260 B.C.)

Aratus (a-rā’tus). A Greek poet and astronomer; born at Soli, Cilicia flourishing about 290–260 B.C. His chief work was an astronomical poem entitled ‘Phænomena’ (Aspects of the Heavens). Greatly admired in antiquity, it was translated into Latin by Cicero and others. He was a friend of the poets Theocritus and Callimachus.
